There's no telling who may be reading over our shoulders 500 years from
now. That's why contemporary documents and memorabilia that are to be
passed on to future generations deserve very special attention. Time
Capsules, Inc. will custom build a container especially for you to
protect your items from the effects of time. The capsule is
extraordinary!
500 Years of Integrity with Our Time Capsule. We Promise.
The capsules we design are more than just a container to protect your
materials from the effects of time. Each capsule is constructed to
withstand humid and/or slat laden atmospheres or urban atmospheres
containing sulphur dioxide or corrosive pollutants. The capsule also
withstands the pressure extremes to which it is subject during the
atmosphere exchange cycle.
Our patented Vapor Phase Deacidification process
is what has our time capsules go beyond extraordinary. This process chemically treats the
contents with a mild organic alkaline substance which neutralizes the
acidity of paper and renders its life expectancy 25 to 40 times greater
than untreated paper. No one else can deliver that kind of
effectiveness. That's why our capsules are guaranteed for 500 years.
How our Time Capsule Works
When ready to use, a predetermined amount of
Hexamethalyne Teramine (HMT) - a mild organic alkaline - is weighed into
a fine mesh cotton sack and sealed in the capsule with the items to be
preserved.
When the oxygen is later evacuated and replaced with dry argon gas, the
HMT slowly transforms from its solid state into a gas which permeates
the contents. The HMT vapor neutralizes the acidity of the paper
and extends its life expectancy from 25 to 40 times that of untreated
paper.
This process is called Vapor Phase Deacidification, and its the key to
the time capsule's preserving capability. This chemical process is
patented in the U.S. and in four foreign countries
Sealing is accomplished via a special Viton rubber gasketing material
and an inert silicone "grease" around the perimeter of the portal.
The access cover of both the inner capsule and the out container (if
used) are held in place by 1/4" X 20" stainless steel hex-head cap
screws on approximately 2" centers around the sealing periphery.
When sealed, the capsule is air and liquid tight.
After sealing, a quick connect manifold withdraws the air by a vacuum
pump. The air is then replaced by the argon gas to eliminate the
effects of oxygen on the contents.
Deterioration and how Our Time Capsule Technology protects against it
Time Capsules, Inc. has developed a technology to preserve books,
documents, metals, plastics and archival materials of almost any type
for as long as the capsule itself lasts.
For many years researchers have sought answers to the causes of
deterioration of book paper, documents and other cellulose containing
archival materials.
Five major causes for deterioration have been
identified:
-
Acid catalyzed degradation of the cellulose fibers.
-
Oxidation of the cellulose molecules.
-
Ultra-violet light catalyzed degradation through highly complex
mechanisms.
-
The attack of fungus or bacterial organisms which may thrive on
chemicals that remain in paper after its manufacture.
-
Insect infestation.
The time capsule is a unique container, custom built to your
specifications, with a controlled environment to protect and preserve
virtually any material for centuries. The construction of the capsule
enables us to guarantee it for 500 years against fire and flood damage
should such natural disasters occur where the capsule is stored.
